Maryville Public Safety is partnering with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration with their semi-annual Drug Take Back event.
Maryville Public Safety Officer Jessica Wilson says the event combats prescription abuse by incinerating expired and unwanted drugs.

"The Prescription Drug Take Back is an event that we do twice a year, partnered with the DEA, to collect medications.  It can be over-the-counter, prescriptions, veterinary.  We are trying to get them out of the homes so they are not misused and dispose of them properly so they don't end up in our water and different things like that.  The DEA collects them and incinerates them."

Wilson says they cannot accept needles, or illegal substances, and that pills can be left in bottles with names on them.

"We are not looking at anything.  Names don't have to be scratched off.  Bottles don't have to be removed.  All of that will be burned."

The Drug Take Back event will take place Monday from 10 a.m to 2 p.m at Maryville Public Safety, 222 East 3rd Street.
